CASTLE OF GOOD HOPE

and IZIKO WILLIAM FEHR COLLECTION, opposite the Grand Parade
 MUSEUM

The Castle of Good Hope is Cape Town’s oldest building, built in 1666 as the headquarters of the VOC (Dutch East India Company). It is home to the Iziko William Fehr Collection of historical paintings and furnishings. The objects in the William Fehr Collection date from the 17th to the 19th centuries and reflect, in general, the furnishings of well-to-do, mainly Cape urban households. The paintings are a rich resource for historical depictions of the people, maritime environment and landscape of Cape Town and its interior. The origins of the items range from Europe to the East, like the diverse origins of the Cape people themselves.

Rooms on the main floor of the Secunde’s House have been furnished to re-create living spaces of Castle officials spanning the 17th to early 19th centuries. Iziko also hosts a series of changing exhibitions of history, archaeology, photography and art at its different venues in the Castle.

Entrance: R20 (adults), R15 (seniors), R10 (students, children 5-16 yrs)
