SAMMY MARKS MUSEUM Zwartkoppies, East of Pretoria | MUSEUM
The Sammy Marks Museum is part of a historical complex that comprises the mansion, gardens, cottages, outbuildings, farmyard and part of the original farm, Zwartkoppies. The farm is associated with South Africa’s first industrialist and entrepreneur, Sammy Marks. The mansion is unique because most of the contents originally belonged to the Marks family. During the Anglo-Boer war (1899-1902), Sammy Marks was instrumental in establishing peace. The negotiations were held on the Lewis and Marks’ estate at Vereeniging. As entrepreneur, Sammy Marks played a leading role in mining, industrialisation and agricultural development between 1880 and 1920 in the former Transvaal. Together with three others, he owned a quarter of the diamond claims in Kimberley. When coal was discovered at present-day Vereeniging, they sold most of their claims and bought the coal-bearing farms on the banks of the Vaal River. Open: Tues–Sun
