BUSHMAN'S CAVE HIKING TRAIL Fouriesberg | NATURE | |||||
The Bushmans Cave Hiking Trail experience, set among typical Eastern Free State mountain scenery, includes Bushman rock art, views over Lesotho, an unfinished clifftop castle, an old fort and prolific birdlife. The natural amphitheatre is popular with church groups. There are three different hiking trails of varying lengths: The Hoenderkop Hiking Trail leads across a plateau to the castle. Construction of this Normandy-style castle was halted due to lack of funds and the remains are a prominent landmark. From here there are uninterrupted views of Lesotho. The Old Fort Hiking Trail is shorter and follows an easy route to a cave with Bushman paintings. After a short climb, the path reaches the ruins of an old fort, which dates back to the Anglo-Boer War. The return is through some lovely forested areas and passes more Bushman art. The Bird Trail is a short walk to a valley near the overnight camp. Birdlife is abundant here with 103 identified species, including the relatively rare bald ibis.
