 NATURE

Established in 1904, Johannesburg Zoo is one of the oldest establishments in Johannesburg. It houses 2009 animals of 343 species in 54 hectares. Emphasis is placed on ensuring the best animal care and welfare. The Zoo focuses on conservation and research and is involved in breeding programmes such as the Wattled Crane recovery programme. Through education, the Zoo draws attention to critical issues facing animals in the wild and biodiversity. The Zoo is open daily and is a safe, accessible family orientated place in which to explore nature, and take a picnic in the heart of Johannesburg. Guided day and night tours are available, providing an opportunity to go behind the scenes to see how the animals are cared for. The Johannesburg Zoo celebrates biodiversity events, where visitors are taught about the dangers facing biodiversity, and their prevention.
