ANGLO BOER WAR MONUMENT, HUGUENOT GEDENKSKOOL & IKHWEZI

Drakenstein
 NATURE

“Ikhwezi” (“morning star” in Xhosa) Community Centre, a non-governmental organisation provides groups of (Mbekweni) women the opportunity to manufacture a wide array of products such as embroidery, woven rugs, clothing, cushion covers, fabric painting, candles, wire work and beadwork. The ABW Monument (Anglo Boer War Monument) focuses on the struggle for freedom and justice of the Cape Afrikaners and other colonists who provided support, or were sympathetic to, the Boers in the Transvaal and Free State Republics during the Anglo Boer War (1899–1902).
This monument is one of its kind in the Western Cape and was unveiled at Laborie Wine Estate on 17 September 2005. The Huguenot Gedenkskool was initiated in 1883 by the Afrikaans community in Dal Josafat and Klein Drakenstein to make sure that their children could be educated in Afrikaans, their mother tongue. Some of South Africa’s greatest poets, authors, scientists and linguists were educated here.
