IZIKO SLAVE LODGE

Corner of Adderley and Wale Streets
 MUSEUM

The Iziko Slave Lodge is one of the oldest buildings in Cape Town. The many names of the building over three centuries – Slave Lodge, Government Offices Building, Old Supreme Court and SA Cultural History Museum – reflect the long and rich history of the building. Iziko Museums is transforming the Slave Lodge into a permanent museum of slavery, using the building itself as a significant artefact. The focus of the exhibits is on the slave history of South Africa, slave family roots and the peopling of South Africa. The Museum aims to increase awareness on human rights, equality, peace and justice, and to transform the Lodge from a site of human wrongs to one of human rights. An audio guide is available. This takes the visitor on a tour of the site, explaining the history of the building.
