DISTRICT SIX MUSEUM

25A Buitenkant Street
 MUSEUM

The District Six Museum portrays the history of apartheid through the story of forced removals and its effects on the ordinary people of Cape Town. The Museum weaves an interesting tapestry of tactile, interactive and material exhibitions. Many of the displays and installation pieces such as the handpainted Street Map, embroidery Name-cloth and Writers Floor, came out of collaborations between ex-residents, artists, and youth groups from the District Six community. This has given the Museum its unique visual character and authentic hand-generated design style. It is therefore a “reflection of the place and the project as a living museum”. Storytelling is used as a way of reconstructing the memory of forced removals. The challenge is to work with this memory to rekindle the fires of community, mobilise the spirit of giving and sharing, of laughter, of life lived in homes and in public spaces, of creativity and volunteerism that was a cornerstone of the old area, a spirit we call kanala.
